Irises are a magnificent flower to plant for summer, they come in all different shades, and smell like root beer! BEWARE though, if eaten by dogs iris bulbs can be poisonous and extremely deadly. If you have any dogs be sure to plant your irises either in your front yard (where the dog isn't) or do not plant them at all.
